Before the cold hits – winterize

Protect your home from extreme cold. Bellevue Realty Executives.
  • Insulate pipes in your home’s crawl spaces, basement and attic. Exposed pipes are more susceptible to freezing. The more insulation you use the better.
  • Heat tape can be used to wrap pipes. Follow instructions to prevent accidental fires. A three foot heating tape with a thermostat costs about $25 at Home Depot
  • Seal leaks and close foundation vents to minimize cold air entering your house and freezing your pipes. BE SURE to open the vents again in the spring to prevent dry rot.
  • Drain and disconnect garden hoses and insulate hose bibs.
  • Know where your water shutoff valve is located. You can get a special wrench at a hardware store for turning it off. Vise grips or pliers will work if you can reach it. It will be below ground.
